St. Matthews Lutheran Church

St. Matthews Lutheran Church

Lutheranism had been established in Davie County, North Carolina prior to the Revolutionary War. The Lutheran Synod of North Carolina was formed in 1803. St. Matthews Lutheran Church began as a primitive log building in 1840 and served as the spiritual home for the early settlers who were united in their faith. Among the first pastors were Reverend Benjamin Arey, Reverend Jacob Crim, and Reverend William Rufus, all names well known in the Lutheran archives of North Carolina.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

This was my first time visiting the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and was enamored at the unmistakable Patriotism shared among strangers I stood shoulder to shoulder with. Onlookers positioned themselves in absolute silence with noticeable, high regard for the ceremony taking place in front of us. This young man in the rain never flinches or missteps; I was thoroughly impressed.

Spring Valley School

The first settlers in Grayson County, Virginia brought with them ideas and customs they’d left behind in their homelands. There’s no records of the first education system in Spring Valley, Virginia, but in 1671, Governor Berkeley of Virginia received an inquiry of the home government as to the course taken concerning churches and schools. The government replied, “The same course that is taken in England…every man according to his ability instructing his children.“ Any evidence related to the first teaching of reading, writing, and arithmetic indicates that students were taught in the home. The instructor might have been a parent, other member of the family, neighbor, Tutor or Governess.

Buick Estate Wagon

The 1957 Buick Estate Wagon was known as the banker’s hot rod of its day. Originally priced at $3,831 and weighing in at 4,423 pounds, just over 10,000 of these Fireball V8 toting tanks were produced that year. It came with optional two or even three tone paint in 21 basic color choices. At one time this was GM’s finest and most expensive wagon.
